He went to Clifton Hill Primary school, and left high school at the age of 14 to take a job as a farmhand in Watchem.
Whilst working in the Warracknabeal area Alan attended a party in a back street at the same time Marie Walther was visiting her brother's residence and there just happened to be a party across the road from her house.
She decided to attend and the rest, as they say, is history.
At the age of 24, Alan married Marie and they moved to Melbourne where he tried his hand at factory work.
Eventually life on the farm would lure him back and he continued in that field until sustaining a back injury which forced him into early retirement.
Alan and Marie had four children and they were born in this order: Theresa being the first, followed by Leanne who tragically died aged 18, then David and Fiona.
Alan was involved in many organisations around Ararat, they include Ararat city councillor, president of Langi Morgala museum, Ararat show society and Tatyoon Football club, AAAC, Riding for the disabled and many others.
OTHER NEWS:
Alan was a regular attendee at Ararat Community Church for a number of years and lived just around the corner until 2020 when he moved into Garden View Court.
Alan passed away a week ago, on Thursday January 21, just short of 61 years of marriage.
Last year the couple received letters from the Prime Minister and the Queen for their 60th anniversary, something rarely achieved nowadays.
