Freeman Hilltops Prosecco $23
Italy's prosecco offers pleasantly tart, lightly sparkling refreshment at a modest price. However, the many northern Italy originals now imported to Australia face a serious quality challenge from local producers. With its strong Italian heritage, Victoria's King Valley became Australia's prosecco heartland. However, Brian Freeman's Altura vineyard near Young, NSW, specialises in Italian varieties, including prosecco. Freeman planted two clones of the variety in 2011 and made his first bubbly from it in 2014. This, the second vintage, offers delicate lemon-like flavour, bracing fresh acidity and tingly effervescence.
