The RSL was first formed after World War I to support veterans and has continued through ensuing conflict, but as veterans' experiences have changed, so have their needs.
Ararat RSL saw the need to change with them and is now in the process of creating the Mess and Barracks.
" I have always considered the need to diversify; it has always been at the forefront of my mind, and now we are just a few months away from making those thoughts a reality," General Manager Maria Whitford said.
"Life is different now, so we are creating a space that is more in keeping with today by changing the menu and, with that, offering a different space that is more in keeping with today's lifestyle.
"The younger veteran will have a place to come during difficult times and a place that recognises the challenges they may face.
"In addition, the RSL provides a safety net for those in distress," she said.
Mess and Barracks will offer a blend of fresh food dishes, with an emphasis on healthy, seasonal ingredients.
These nourishing meals will energise and invigorate patrons.
"We have the whole person in mind, a healthy body, and a healthy mind, and the combined efforts of the RSL will enhance the overall support system for veterans, promoting togetherness and good mental health," she said.
The new space will convert into a tapas and wine bar at night, with pizza on the menu.
It will suit individuals, couples, or groups to congregate and enjoy good food in a comfortable setting.
"This initiative not only fosters a sense of belonging but also emphasises the RSL's commitment to those who have served, ensuring they have a place to turn to during difficult times," she said.
Ms Whitford said the RSL is a place where veterans can bond, share experiences and find common ground.
"Often the RSL is the only place veterans feel comfortable sharing their experiences and their challenges where they share a common bond."
Additionally, the RSL can offer crisis accommodation to all veterans and recognise their challenges.
"We envisage the Mess and Barracks becoming an integral part of the Ararat community, and we look forward to welcoming people to this new space.
"We plan to be open to the public within three to four months," Ms Whitford said.
The Returned and Services League of Australia has been advocating for the benefits and treatment, and the RSL is the only place veterans feel comfortable sharing their experiences and challenges, the welfare of current and ex-serving members of the Australian Defence Force and leading the nation in commemorative services since 1916.
