The property located on Queen Street has been the subject to many fires over the years as reported in the Ararat Advertiser.

The Ararat Advertiser understands some of the parts of the property have been demolished.

In a statement made on its social media site, Ararat Rural City Council said there was no future development plans known to them for the site.

Council also stated a contractor had been appointed for the demolition works.

Council is aware that there has been some interest concerning demolition activity that has commenced at the former Prestige Mill site.

The owners have been issued with a demolition permit, with Marx Metal Recycling managing the project. To date, the external office building has been removed with the remaining demolition of the main building and site preparation expected to be completed over the next six months.

The contractor is a licensed asbestos remover and has been working with WorkSafe Victoria. We have been advised that WorkSafe have issued all the necessary approvals to ensure this is managed safely and without risk to the community and adjacent uses.

Planning controls remain in place on the cemetery site and any activity or redevelopment in this area would trigger a planning and state heritage permit.

Council has not been advised of future development plans for the site beyond the demolition. However, we remain committed to help attract residential and commercial development opportunities that will secure new jobs and investment in Ararat.
