Ararat & District Historical Society president Gerry Bolt said the museum's collection provides a rich insight into the region's history.
"Everything here pertains to the heritage of Ararat and district," he said.
"We have one of the most fantastic collections of Aboriginal artifacts.

"You would never see anything like this out of a major city museum.
"This isn't just the white history of Ararat, it's all history."
Mr Bolt said there is further significance to the museum in how its collection has been acquired.
"Everything here comes from local people," he said.
"Every single item has been donated either by the council, by local business, by local institutions, or by local individuals.
"As far as I know we've never purchased a single item for display here.
"This whole place belongs to the community."
Mr Bolt highlighted a recent donation that epitomised this generosity.
"Last year we were given a World War Two flying jacket from the Salvation Army Op Shop," he said.
"It's worth $1200 American, and we've been given this.
"You just nearly fall over when people give you stuff like that."

The generosity shown by giving donations is matched by generosity the volunteers show in giving their time to looking after them.
However, over the past year the society has had several members depart without anyone to take their place.
This has made it difficult for the society to find hours needed to maintain such a vast collection.
Furthermore, the museum is reliant on door takings to cover its expenses, but with less volunteers it cannot be open as long, and therefore cannot collect the same amount of revenue.
Mr Bolt said helping preserve the history within the museum is "just such a worthwhile thing."
Those interested in volunteering at the museum can email langimorgala7@gmail.com or contact the museum through its Facebook page.
