Bureau of Meteorology duty forecaster Chris Arvier said the most severe of the storms lashed the region between 8pm and 10pm on Tuesday.
He said rumbles of thunder could have been heard before that point.
A Victoria State Emergency Service spokeswoman said Dunmunkle members were called to Wal Wal at 9.16am on Wednesday for three trees down across the road. This created a traffic hazard for Glenorchy and Minnieboro roads.
The spokeswoman said the Stawell unit attended Deep Lead about 4.45pm on Tuesday after a tree fell across the Western Highway near the Oasis truck stop. The unit was back in station by 5.15pm.
The spokeswoman said there were 30 jobs in the mid-west region overnight, with most in the Ballarat region.

A severe weather warning for damaging winds was issued for much of the state, including the Wimmmera, on Tuesday afternoon.
Mr Arvier said the strongest recorded winds in the region, at 85 kilometres an hour, were at Edenhope at 5.10pm.
But he said it was likely there were stronger winds not measured by the bureau's weather stations.
Winds of up to 98km/h were measured in Ballarat and up to 69km/h in Horsham.
Mr Arvier said there was widespread rainfall of 10mm-20mm across the state.
Ararat received 17mm, Edenhope 16mm, Stawell 11.8 and Horsham 12mm.
Mr Arvier said there was a reprieve from the weather on Wednesday morning, but the next front would change things in the afternoon.
"That will be coming through later this afternoon, reaching most of the Wimmera around 4pm," he said.
"We're not really expecting thunderstorms or wind. Small hail is possible on Thursday morning."
Mr Arvier said 10 to 15mm was likely overnight Wednesday in the Wimmera.
He said with the rain came cold weather.
"It's looking pretty wintry," he said.
He forecast a maximum of just 13 degrees for Horsham on Thusday, 14 degrees on Friday and 15 degrees on Saturday.
"It's quite cool, quite cloudy," he said.
