This year the club is celebrating 45 years of women playing competitive basketball in Stawell.
With only eight players registered, president Deb Slorach said at least another four was needed for the competition to go ahead.
"We have operated in the past with 12 rather than let the club fold, but it was extremely difficult," she said.
"Ultimately we'd like a minimum of 16. 20 would be great."
Slorach said player numbers had dropped off over the past few years due to work commitments.
"We know there would be some players out there who would be interested in joining in our fun competition," she said.
"The competition has provided a friendly and inclusive space for many over the 45 years of competition.
"It would be a shame for the competition to not run, especially in our anniversary year."
In 2019, the competition won an award in the Victorian government's This Girl Can campaign.
"Our competition is all about inclusion and so many women over the years have made wonderful friendships through basketball," Slorach said. "We have set up our game day where mothers can bring their children and we have a rotating roster for childminding while parents are on the court.
"We welcome all abilities and skill levels. It doesn't matter if anyone hasn't played the sport before.
"Basketball is a fun way to keep fit and women's day basketball is very social."
Club administrator Trish Ralph also expressed her disappointment with the lack of numbers.
"Some clubs struggle with getting enough volunteers to run competitions," she said.
"This isn't the case for us. Unfortunately, a lot of us are getting older and can't play anymore but are happy to help with the administration of the club.
"Women's Day Basketball has a supportive committee who strives to run a competition to suit the needs of women in Stawell. If we don't get the numbers we might not have enough to run a competition."
