It was just as quiet in the "holiday hot spots of Halls Gap and Lake Bolac", Senior Sergeant Rob Weppner said.
Police spent New Year's Day conducting preliminary breath testing in Ararat, and Acting Senior Sergeant Shaun Allen said not a single driver was found to be under the influence of drugs or over the blood-alcohol limit.
"We do our preliminary testing site early in the morning on New Year's Day, so targeting those that have had a big night last night," Senior Sergeant Allen said.
"Thus far we've been here for an hour and we haven't got anyone.
"It's the behaviour that we expect and endorse so that's been promising this morning."
Across the state, police were called to fireworks incidents in Werribee, Healesville and Oakleigh. A 31-year-old Oakleigh man has been taken to hospital for related injuries.
