The essence of U3A Stawell was captured by a recent past president, he said: "I came to U3A Stawell, a person who was so shy I could barely string two words together publicly. It was not long before, with the camaraderie and friendship of U3A, that I could learn how to and then give an hour-long talk on my favourite subject".

In May 1989, a group of Northern Grampians Shire residents lead by Margo Woodcock, approached the shire for support to establish a U3A within Stawell and surrounds.
The interest from Northern Grampians Shire and the public was enthusiastic and encouraging.
Never frightened to have a go, the Friday Focus Group some years ago tackled a very serious subject, the group spent a full-term discussing, preparing and completing a report - Life in a Republic Australia. This report was then sent to Canberra for their perusal.
Thirty years later U3A Stawell is still a strong member of the U3A International movement; with four of the foundation members remaining active in U3A Stawell.
Foundation member and still active member Joyce Dowsett said over the years there have been many interesting and exciting activities.
Joyce recalled, "everything we did, even the most serious, we could colour with laughter, good humour and often some witty one liner".

1868 Café, 56 Longfield St (Western Highway, Stawell, next door to the Historical Society) is the venue for a celebratory lunch.
