Deakin University students Meg Ellis and Ana Sizemova will work at Stawell Regional health for the next 12 months through their university’s Rural Community Clinical School program.
The third-year medical students arrived in the town in late January, settling in quite well.
“So far so good. The team we have been working with has been caring, kind, friendly and extremely welcoming,” Ms Ellis said.
Despite having plenty of options in other rural areas of Victoria, the pair chose Stawell at the top of their lists to visit for multiple reasons.
“I think we were both intrigued by a town at the foot of the mountains,” Ms Ellis said.
“It is very rewarding to have hands on experience and to meet people who we will see again, that continuity is terrific.”
Ms Sizemova also said the Grampians was a big drawcard.
“We are both into bushwalking and nature so Stawell fits very well with that,” she said.
“We are also excited by the learning opportunities we will have in our positions.
“This is like a dream, it doesn’t feel real at all. I am very excited to be here, and to learn as much as possible.”
The students are in Stawell for the year with their clinical placements, but are already keen to return in 2020 should the opportunity present itself.
Stawell’s Meg Blake sits on a board at Deakin University involved with helping students in the Rural Community Clinical School program.
She helps the students settle into the town and experience all there is to offer in the region.
“We have already seen some of the Grampians and there is plenty more to show,” she said.
“Once again we have some fantastic students here who are very excited for to help those in the community.”
