Inaccuracy from both teams kept the contest close in the first term but it was all Great Western’s way after that.
They hit some great attacking form, with 36 scoring shots by full time. The Eagles put in a strong effort in the final term but it was the Lions who picked up the four points, winning 19.17 (131) to 10.12 (72).
Shannon Notting booted five goals in his 200th match for the Lions while Brent Bulger also picked up five for the visiting team.
“Shan had a bit of an injury going into the game so we chucked him up forward and he really rose to the occasion,” Bell said.
Steve Lorenzo had two majors with his trademark pressure earning him best on ground honours for the Lions.
It was a day of celebration for Great Western, with Nathan Shalders snagging three majors to lead the reserves to victory in his 300th match.
The senior win was Great Western’s fifth of the season, its best record since the 2013 season (six wins).
“At the start of the season we set a target of winning five games so it is really pleasing to reach that mark,” Lions coach Will Bell said.
“The boys are proud as punch to have gotten another win late in the season.
“It was a bit of a shonky first half but it was good to blow it open after half-time.”
