Ashby was accepted into the Royal Military College-Duntroon in Canberra. She will partake in leadership, management and military training over the next 18-months. She will be capable of taking charge of a platoon of up to 30 soldiers when she graduates.
Ashby said she wanted to join the army because it was an opportunity to help others become the best versions of themselves.
“I have always known I wanted to do something amazing with my life and I want to use the life I have to lead and encourage others to make a difference as well,” she said. “I’m excited for the challenges that army life will bring but also the rewards.”
Ashby said she was inspired by her grandmother to join the Australian Defence Force. She said her grandmother was an Australian army cadet captain during the 1980’s.
Ashby said she wanted to make her grandmother proud by using the skills her grandmother had taught her.
