Tatyoon travelled to take on reigning premiers Lismore-Derrinallum in a must-win match for both sides.
The teams went into the match level on points with the victor to move inside the top three.
Despite strong chances early on, the Hawks could not capitalise in front of goal as the Demons held on to tight crucial quarter-time and half-time leads.
A three-goal-to-one third term helped the home side break away to a 19-point lead going into the final term, making things difficult for the visitors.
In an inspired quarter of football, Tatyoon booted five goals to two to edge in front and hold on for a one-point win. Scores were locked at 79-a-piece when Jarrod Blandford slotted the winning behind with about 30 seconds remaining.
The final score finished with Tatyoon in front 12.8 (80) to 12.7 (79).
“I always thought we were capable of winning but it wasn’t until the last 10 minutes or so I thought we had a chance,” Tatyoon coach Simon Brearley said.
“We played well below par for three and a half quarters but at the end we started to win the footy at stoppages and drive off half back which we lacked a bit early on.
“Turnovers early in the game cost us a lot too.”
McDougall played an inspired milestone match, named as the best on ground for Tatyoon. Brearley said the 300-gamer was “super”.
“’Xander’ beat his opponent all day in the air, he was just fantastic,” he said.
“We couldn’t have scripted it any better for him.”
The Hawks have won six of their last seven matches and sit two points clear in third.
“Our goal a few weeks ago was to be in the top three at the mid-season break which we have achieved,” Brearley said.
“We are now in a really good position to hold onto a top three spot which is crucial come finals time. I’m happy with where we are at the moment.”
