The Hawks got the win by 25 points with efficiency in front of goal proving crucial with both teams having the same amount of scoring shots.
It was a pretty even first half between both teams with the margin at five points at the long break.
A four goals to one final quarter ensured the home team got the points in the round nine clash.
Trevor-John Wanganeen bagged four goals for the Hawks while Luke Todd and Matt Fogarty each finished with three majors for the visitors.
Hawks coach Simon Brearley said it was good to put in that type of performance against a strong rival.
“We were efficient in front of goals, in the last two or three weeks we have been making the most of our opportunities which is pleasing,” he said.
“We defended the corridor pretty well, they missed some shots from wide and we won clearances 32-22, so our midfield was right on top of another quality midfield which was a good sign.”
The home team had seven individual goalkickers for the match, something which has been a focus.
“We have a few dangerous forwards who have kicked some bags the last couple of weeks, so winning it in the midfield is always a good sign and makes their job easier,” he said.
“We sent Andy Laidlaw to Luke Todd, sacrifice his game to stop his influence and that worked in the second half for us.”
The rivalry between the two teams has been growing in recent years with some tough encounters on the field.
Brearley said it was an important match to win for the Hawks’ finals prospects.
“Being new to the club, I am learning about the rivalries and some of the boys mentioned Moyston-Willaura generally play pretty well against us,” he said.
“It was important for us to win to keep in touch with the top three and try and get that double chance.”
The win leaves the Hawks in fifth position with Tatyoon one of three teams on 24 points.
Moyston-Willaura are now two wins out of the fop five in eighth position after nine games.
The game was part of the Sock it to MND round with teams wearing blue and white socks to raise money for the disease.
Only two rounds remain before clubs have their midseason bye.
