The Stawell Bowls Club has had a dominant season with the grand final win capping off the 2017-18 midweek bowls season.
Angela Hodgetts skippered the first of the Stawell group with Stawell Golf’s Dawn Blackman tasked with opposing Hodgetts.
The Stawell team got off to a good start with the Stawell Golf squad making some good shots during the rink but was unable to do it regularly enough.
Hodgetts’ group went on to record a 26 shots to 20 win to give Stawell the early lead with two rinks to play.
The second rink of the grand final was the most one-sided of the match with Rita Pyke’s squad easily accounting for Dulcie Molan’s by 22 shots to set up the win.
Pyke showed her experience throughout the rink, as she was supported by the rest of her team during the rink, playing some extraordinary shots as Molan had no answers on the green.
The win gave Stawell a massive 28-shot lead going into the final rink of the season finale.
Stawell’s Ellen Werry and Stawell Golf’s Annette Dwyer took to the green to skip their respective teams in the final rink with Dwyer needing something special to get the overall win for her team.
It was a relatively even start for both teams, as the two groups settled in to the speed of the green.
The Stawell Golf found its rhythm and started to build up a lead on the scoreboard.
The scoreboard advantage continued to grow but it was not going to be enough to reel in the deficit from the previous two rinks, as Stawell Golf went on to win 21 shots to 12 to win the rink but lose the overall match.
It continues an impressive run for the club, as a Stawell Bowls Club team won the midweek competition the past two years prior to this season.
Stawell Blue defeated Stawell Golf in that final with the club remaining just as strong this season.
Stawell club secretary Kerry West said it was great to win another title.
“It has been a very good three years for us, especially for the midweek pennant,” she said.
“We did have to amalgamate our two teams from last season into one this year which probably made us a bit stronger this year.
“I did think we would be a little bit stronger but I was surprised how well the team gelled together.”
West said it was a little bit more special beating the club’s crosstown rivals.
“Yes it is a bit of a crosstown rivalry, Stawell Golf was the only team to beat us during the season, so it was always a bit of extra motivation for us,” she said.
“We were the two standout teams, so it was good to get the win against them.”
