One driver quickly glances at their mobile phone to read a text message. In that split second the driver swerves their car onto the opposing side and the two cars collide.
The results are fatal.
This is the reason drivers who use mobile phones and other devices like smartwatches incorrectly while driving face harsh penalties.
So what are the rules and who do they apply to?
Learner, P1 and P2 drivers
If you fall into this category you cannot use your phone at all when driving – this includes hands free.
Fully licensed car drivers
You can only use a mobile phone to make or receive a call or to play music.
Even so, the phone must be secured in a holder or be able to be operated by the driver without them touching any part of the phone.
The phone cannot be in the driver’s lap.
You should not use your phone as a GPS unless it is secured in a holder.
Smartwatches
When a Smartwatch is worn by a driver it should not be used while driving for making or receiving phone calls, navigation, music, text or video messaging, email or social media.
Penalties
All drivers face tough penalties for illegal use of a mobile phone.
The penalties are 4 demerit points and a $466 fine.
