Their work includes looking after people before, during and after surgery, meaning patients often never meet the people who care for them while they are unconscious.
East Grampians Health Service perioperative service manager Jane Smith said her staff were the patients advocate while they are unconscious.
“While they have been unconscious there has been a whole team of perioperative nurses looking after them,” she said.
Ararat Hospital has 36 perioperative nurses, who are all highly qualified, with most obtaining post graduate education.
Perioperative nurses week runs from Monday to Friday.
