Both teams were evenly match going into the game, but it was the Lions that came out on top.
Lions played three strong quarters of football to record the win 15.15 (105) to 12.20 (92). Great Western coach Andrew Bach was pleased to take the points, but was still frustrated with his team’s effort.
“We are always happy to take the points,” Bach said.
“But we fell into bad habits during the last quarter and it nearly cost us again. It still wasn’t a full four-quarter effort.”
Both sides had ample opportunities in front of goal, but were rarely able to capitalise.
“Both teams went forward and missed easy shots on goal,” Bach said.
“Even though they had more scoring shots I felt we were always in control.”
Great Western was powerful in defence, with Luke Notting leading the way.
Justin Thomas played his role to perfection in the early parts of the match and Bach said his marking ability was what kept Great Western one step ahead.
Contributors in the backline included Bew Newson, who was best on ground, and Adam McGaffin.
Others to impress were BJ Burton and Chris Bourke. Sam Cocks kicked six goals in the win and used his body well.
The win was an important one for the club and it is hoped that it can turn the Lions poor season around.
“It was an important win for us,” Bach said.
“It was not perfect but a win is a win. We just hope now we can get the ball rolling.”
Late in the game, the Lions showed just how good the club can be when players moved the ball from fullback to full forward to score with just three kicks.
“We need to play that direct brand of football more often,” Bach said.
“It is just a matter of trusting our instincts and going with the first option.”
It was a good day for the club, with the Great Western netballers securing the Lions’ first A Grade win in three years. Both teams celebrated accordingly at the club’s annual ball on Saturday night.
