Kyrios’ third-round departure came amid the talented Aussie’s complaints of a shoulder injury.
But Gasquet’s backhand stroke gave the 21-year-old as much trouble, leaving him with 44 unforced errors compared to the Frenchman’s 17.
Kyrgios lost the first set in 31 minutes, receiving treatment for his shoulder injury often during the match.
Booing greeted Kyrgios’ racket smash before the second set, with Kyrgios also ejecting his brother from his box during the match.
There were happier scenes in Stosur’s third round match, where she dismissed 11th seed Safarova 6-3 6-7 (0-7) 7-5.
Stosur now faces Simona Halep in the fourth round.
