Gasons convincing in winter contest

ARARAT - Gasons topped off a strong season in Ararat City Tennis Club's Wednesday night men's winter competition with a convincing win over Mitre 10.

Gasons really lifted during the second half of the competition to finish on top of the ladder for the winter season.

Last Wednesday, Gasons went out on a high, defeating Mitre 10, 4-35 to 1-22.

Gasons' Mark Stevens played fairly well considering his broken racquet, figuring in two wins, while teammate Sam Gason outplayed the occasionally brilliant left-hander, Michael Hope.

Duncan Giles impressed for Mitre 10, teaming up with Lachlan McDougall to claim the team's only win.

Carey Covers outclassed Eastick Homes, claiming victory 5-38 to 0-25.

Carey Covers' number one player, Rick Thomas may not be as quick or drive balls as hard as younger players, but his consistent returns and deep placements keep the pressure on his opponents.

Thomas won all three of his match ups last week, as did Ben Pietsch, who displayed fantastic agility.

Peter Forster was the most effective player for Eastick Homes.

A couple of close sets were played out in the final match of the night, but in the end Retravsion proved too strong for Tyrepower, winning 3-35 to 1-26.

Mick Verdon's consistency forced his Tyrepower opponents to make a number of errors, while teammate Phil Goudie won a number of shots with clever ball placement.

Tyrepower's Andy Tucker, undoubtedly the strongest player in the competition, didn't dominate on the night.

Tucker was just about matched by Retravision number one, Darren Beer.
