As in previous years, the concert will feature performances from students from Marian College, Ararat College, Ararat 800 and this year for the first time, Ararat West Primary School.
The concert will feature bands, choirs and VCE soloists from both Marian and Ararat College, showcasing the talents of Ararat’s youth.
Prior to the concert, a ‘Come and Try’ session will be held to promote the bands Development Program.
“Over the past two years the band has just gone from strength to strength,” band secretary and development program coordinator, Sandra Pope, said.
“A large part of this has been the growth of the development program, we now have 28 students participating, including both children and adults.”
The band has recently received a grant from the Helen McPherson Smith Trust to expand the development program.
This combined with sponsorship from RES Australia, has allowed the band to purchase more instruments so that more students can participate.
The Ararat City Band encourages anyone who may be interested in joining to come along to the concert and see what it has to offer.
Musical Director, Wally Pope, points to the family orientated nature of the band.
“We currently have a grandmother, daughter and grandson all playing in the band together, and a number of other family groups,” Mr Pope said.
“Music can open up so many opportunities for people, especially children and we aim to reach as many people as we can through the program.”
Recent successful results by members of the program at the Victorian State Solo and Ensemble Championships in Melbourne include:
Izzie Pope (percussion) – 1st junior timpani, 1st junior multi percussion; Annabelle Cheesman – 1st Juvenile Tenor Horn; Walter Pope – 2nd Under 12 Cornet; Walter Pope and Annabelle Cheesman – 2nd Juvenile Duet and Wilbur Pope and Sophia Cheesman – 3rd Juvenile Duet.
The Ararat City Band Variety Concert will commence at 7pm on Monday, September 7 at the Ararat Performing Arts Centre.
Entry is free.
The ‘come and try’ session will be from 6:15pm in the foyer.
