The Landcare community is deeply concerned about the devastating environmental impact of the Western Highway duplication between Beaufort and Buangor.
Although improvements to road safety and road quality are generally welcome, these improvements have come at a huge environmental cost according to Landcare, particularly on the section between Beaufort and Buangor.
Landcare believes high quality redgum forest has been destroyed including many large trees which were hundreds of years old. These old trees, many of which pre-dated European settlement, were full of hollows that provided homes for a host of birds, insects and animals.
According to Landcare the destruction of this redgum forest is just one of several environmental concerns which will be discussed at the February meeting of the Ararat Landcare Group.
VicRoads representatives have been invited to attend the meeting which will provide an opportunity for a wide-ranging discussion on what can be done to minimise the environmental impact of the highway duplication for the section from Buangor to Stawell.
Interested community members are invited to attend the meeting at St Andrews Uniting Church Hall, Barkly Street on Monday February 2 at 7pm.
