THE Nationals' candidate for Ripon Scott Turner has called on the State Government to invest in key Ararat sporting projects, including the Gordon Street Oval and the Alexandra Gardens Active Pathway Project.
"Sport is a great way for people to be active and meet with others. Talking to people in my home town of Ararat, I am very aware of a real need for additional space for sporting activities," Mr Turner said.
"As The Nationals' candidate for Ripon, I am actively seeking to improve community facilities, and the Gordon Street Oval development is high on my list of important sporting ground upgrades."
Mr Turner showed Deputy Premier, Peter Ryan around the Gordon Street site on a recent visit to the region and spoke of the need to have the redevelopment project funded.
Mr Turner said he has also been in touch with the Minister for Sport and Recreation, Damian Drum, about why it is crucial to fund the Alexandra Gardens Active Pathway Project.
The pathway project will link Alexandra Oval to the Ararat CBD and also involves redevelopment of the change rooms for the Ararat Outdoor Olympic Swimming Pool.
"Minister Drum was here for my campaign launch, and I was able to talk to him in some detail about the importance of both these projects," Mr Turner said.
The Ararat Rural City Council has developed a three stage grand plan for the enhancement of Gordon Street Oval as a sporting complex.
Stage one of its proposal would see an $80,000 renovation of the existing clubrooms, followed by $120,000 to upgrade the oval's surface and finally stage three a $1.34 million construction of two hockey fields with synthetic playing surfaces.
