The Kym Ludvigsen Trophy for Viticultural Excellence will respect the legacy of the esteemed Ararat region viticulturist, by recognising and celebrating the contribution that grape growers and vineyard managers make to the wine-making process.
Mr Ludvigsen passionately dedicated his life to Australian viticulture for more than 40 years, before his untimely death late last year.
He was passionate about viticulture, research, development and vine improvement with his work helping to advance the landscape of many Australian vineyards.
Mr Ludvigsen's wife, Donna said the award will be lasting recognition of the involvement her husband had in shaping the wine-making process across the region.
"To me what really stands out about this award is that it is perpetual and I think that is wonderful," she said.
"Everything is so fleeting in this world, however, through this award his memory can live on forever."
In demand at industry conferences and seminars as a speaker, Mr Ludvigsen was regarded as a great communicator and inspirational presenter.
He was an active participant on many boards and committees relating to viticulture, vineyard improvements and excellence.
Mrs Ludvigsen said Kym was always a strong advocate for the viticulture industry.
"He was always involved in industry politics, he wasn't shy and retiring, however, he didn't sell himself, it was never about him, always about the issue," he said.
"A real advocate for growing grapes in this area, he was recognised by so many people in Ararat, the sort of person who just waved to everybody."
The Kym Ludvigsen Trophy for Viticultural Excellence will be presented to the grower or team behind the grapes that produce the single vineyard trophy wine at this year's RMWA.
"Kym recognised that every vineyard was unique, that every grower was passionate about their vineyard, that every grape represented a year's toil and dreams," Mrs Ludvigsen said.
"He believed in and lived viticultural excellence. Kym would see this award as a tribute to all single vineyard growers."
Phil Sexton, Chair of the RMWA, said the committee was delighted to receive a communication from The Grampians Winemakers Inc about honouring Kym Ludvigsen with a trophy in his name.
"Outstanding viticulture practices are vital to the production of outstanding wine," he said.
"I'm proud that the awards now recognise excellence in the field and hope the trophy encourages ongoing progress in Australian viticulture."
The RMWA - conducted by the Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria (RASV) - is Australia's premier wine award program.
It celebrates excellence and promotes eminence in both the Australian and international wine industry, through a showcase of the industry's diversity and quality.
