Held annually in either Victoria, New South Wales or South Australia, the Tri-State games offers clients from different disability service organisations the opportunity to enter into a week long sporting event. The activities held include indoor sports, track and field sports, swimming and team sports.
Last year, the event was held at Mount Baker, South Australia. While it was the first time that clients from the Ararat Day Program entered, support staff manager, Cheryle Stapleton assures that this will not be the last.
"[The clients] had an absolute ball... they all want to go again next year," she said.
However, she also said that this would not have been possible without the support given by local businesses.
"We're very lucky... through the sponsorship we were able to get the uniforms and accommodation needed," she said.
With such a positive experience had by all comes hope that they will be able to get even more clients involved this year.
"It was absolutely wonderful for everyone involved, including staff who volunteered a lot of their time... [next time] we hope to get as much support as we can," Ms Stapleton said.
Along with the Ararat Motor Inn, other sponsors included Kraft Foods, HACSU, Building Product Supplies - Melbourne, Supported Choice, the Ararat Medical Centre, Ruthven Steel, EW Bulte, Albert Feher Electrical, AME Systems Pty Ltd, RAL Homes and EmbroidAbility.
The Tri-State games originated in Mildura in 1986 and has grown since, currently having approximately 300 athletes competing each year.
