When The Ararat Advertiser went to press two residents had nominated for the vacated position on council.
Nominations for the position also close today at 12pm, with the ballot paper draw to be held at 1pm at the Visitor Information Centre.
Returning Officer Andy McCann said ballot papers will be mailed out and should be received on or shortly after January 29.
Residents have about two weeks to place their vote and return by mail or drop off to a ballot box at either the Visitor Information Centre or Ararat Rural City Municipal Offices by 6pm on February 14.
Election day will be Saturday, February 15.
The seventh councillor position was made vacant following the resignation of Ian Wilson in November last year.
Today's ballot paper draw is a public event.
