Freemasons Victoria has made available a bursary to ensure the long term viability of Medical Imaging Services at EGHS.
Richard Parkin, Worshipful Master of the Freemasons United Ararat Lodge, presented the award to Ms Leeke.
"On behalf of Freemasons Victoria it is a great pleasure to assist our local community where we can and this is one tangible way that we can show that we can do that," he said.
Ms Leeke has been employed by EGHS since October 2012. Her role in the radiology department initially included only general x-ray and CT examinations.
Prior to commencing at EGHS she worked in Perth, which is where she first enrolled in the Diploma of Sonography. The Diploma of Sonography offered by University of SA required a year of theory-only coursework with little practical work.
Ms Leeke said that when the opportunity of an ultrasound training position became available at EGHS, the decision to move was logical.
She was able to commence the practical/scanning subjects and receive hands on training under the supervision of EGHS's chief sonographer Craig Newson.
Ms Leeke has now completed six of the eight subjects which form the Diploma of Sonography and hopes to graduate at the end of 2014.
"It would like to thank Freemasons Victoria very much for this opportunity as well as East Grampians Health Service for their support," Ms Leeke said.
"I really hope to give Ararat and the community an ultrasound service that its continuously improving."
