Victorian Opposition Leader Michael O'Brien has offered his congratulations to Louise Staley.
"I offer my heartfelt congratulations to Louise Staley, the Member for Ripon and Shadow Treasurer, as the Labor Party concedes it will drop its futile challenge to the result declared by the Victorian Electoral Commission in the seat of Ripon," he said.
"Louise has worked tirelessly in representing her constituents in Ripon; a fact reflected in her victory in the most marginal Coalition-held seat in Victoria at the 2018 State election.
"I look forward to continuing to work with her as a senior member of my Shadow Cabinet.
"It is shameful that Daniel Andrews and the Labor Party chose to waste the time of our courts in an attempt to challenge the decision of the voters of Ripon."
Earlier:
THE Labor party has withdrawn its petition to the Court of Disputed Returns over the outcome of the 2018 state election in Ripon.
The case went to the court Monday and was adjourned to Tuesday May 6.
However, a settlement was reached outside of court, said Labor spokesman Kosmos Samaras.
"The short story is that we have performed a detailed assessment of our scrutineers' notes and determined that in a recount, we would not fare well," he said.
"So rather than risk going to a hearing and not faring well, we withdrew the petition."
Labor challenged the result of the Ripon electorate from last year's state election, with incumbent MP Louise Staley holding her seat by just 15 votes against Labor candidate Sarah De Santis.
The electorate was handed to incumbent Liberal member Louise Staley by just 15 votes on a two party-preferred basis after the November 24 Victorian election.
More to come.
