The former Natimuk and Nhill coach will take over from Adrian Pilgrim after he took on a coaching role at TAC Cup club Western Jets.
Brearley said his family was a bit part of why he took the job.
“Knowing the history of Tatyoon, once I met with some of the guys from the club it became pretty clear it would fit in around my family,” he said.
The new coach is recovering from a knee reconstruction and has left the door open to playing next season if recovery goes smoothly.
“I had the LARS surgery done a few weeks ago and last time I was back playing within four months, so all going to plan I will be able to play as well,” he said.
“I will not be able to do much earlier in the season but there are plans to get on the field at some stage.”

Brearley has had some discussions with outgoing coach Adrian Pilgrim about how he approached the role and what things worked for the team.
He said clearly they are doing a lot of things right given the success the team has had recently.
“I won’t be looking to make any big changes, just make little ones along the way and obviously Adrian has said he will be available to play some games, so I can bounce ideas off him as well,” he said.
The club has yet to start its preseason due to harvesting with the team not likely to all get together until the middle of January. A meet the coaches night was planned for Thursday night in Tatyoon.
