The man was travelling at 167 kilometres an hour in a 100kmh zone about 1.40am.
He was driving north of St Arnaud, towards Donald, on the Sunraysia Highway.
Sergeant Steve Armarti of St Arnaud said the motorist was a probationary driver.
“His car was impounded on the spot, for 30 days, and he was given a $2050 fine,” he said.
The man was released, pending a court summons.
He was charged with driving at a speed dangerous and failing to display P-plates.
Sergeant Armarti said the man’s actions were “ridiculous”.
“It’s very concerning to see someone travelling at that high level of speed,” he said.
“To be travelling at the speed at nighttime… Anything could have happened.”
Sergeant Armarti said motorists must think about other road users and the consequences of not following the road rules.
