ARARAT Rural City councillors will gather for a statutory meeting on Tuesday evening to elect the Mayor for 2017-18.

The statutory meeting will be held in the council chamber at Shire Hall in Barkly Street, Ararat from 6pm.
A deputy mayor will also be elected for the same term.
Current mayor Paul Hooper said he would serve another term if asked to by the majority of councillors.
“I would do one last term if I was asked to by the majority of councillors to see through the recommendations of the commission of inquiry,” he said.
“There’s a lot of work to be done there, but that’s up to the councilllors.
“They may have had enough of my boof head and look for a new direction, I don’t know.”
Cr Hooper said there was also a a need to help the new chief executive Allan Bawden settle in.
“We have got a rating strategy to do, there is significant amount of work to be done in the financial sustainability of council.
“These things were identified in the commission of inquiry report.
“I haven’t lobbied for another term, and I have no expectation of it, but we’ll see what happens.”
Cr Hooper was referring to a state government commission of inquiry that handed down a raft of recommendations this year in response to Ararat Rural City’s proposal to abolish differential rates.
Cr Glenda McLean is the current deputy mayor.
Ararat Rural City’ has three councillors who are serving their first term in municipal government.
Cr Gwenda Allgood was first elected in 1982 and has have served five times as mayor.
Cr Peter Beales served as mayor of Yea and Murrindindi councils for four terms.
