Ararat skate park improvement committee member John Cranstoun said it was just one of the pending upgrades for the park.
“Obviously the new shade structure is the latest physical addition,” he said.
“There will be a report going to Ararat Rural City Council in November to decide who will get awarded the tender for the skate park’s other upgrades.
“Soon after that, hopefully, they can begin construction.”
Ararat Rural City announced the tender last month for work that will involve refurbishing the skate park and constructing an extension the Alexandra Avenue venue’s features.
The designs call for adding a new sub-ground bowl to the park in which users can perform tricks.
The shade shelter was built with the help of a state government grant from the Department of Health and Human Services.
Mr Cranstoun said Ararat businesses providing in-kind labor saved quite a bit of money.
“We’ve had a bit of verbal feedback from skate park users about the new shelter but it seems to be working, especially on the hot days this week.” he said.
“It’s something that we have really needed for a long time, not only for the sun but if you get a sudden shower it’s a great place to duck out of the weather for a little bit.
“It’s arrived just in time for the weather.”
Mr Cranstoun said he wanted to thank the businesses involved.
“Woods eathmoving, Murley David Plumbing, Eastick Homes and Hotondo Homes supplied equipment and labour,” he said.
“We got a grant for $14,900.
“Without the donated labor, if we had to pay a builder from start to finish, it would have probably added a further seven or eight grand on to that.
“We saved a lot of costs and came in right on budget because of the help from those guys.”
