The international initiative raises awareness about plastic pollution and encourages people to commit to reducing their habit of single-use plastic.
Stawell’s War on Waste member Helga Saunders said the challenge has been a success so far.
“We are aiming to run various campaigns to get people to decrease their use of plastic,” she said.
The campaigns involved working bees, encouraging people to bring their own bags to supermarkets and lobbying for cafe`s to offer discounted coffee to customers who bring their own cup.
It comes after supermarket giant Woolworths announced last week its stores across Australia will stop giving out single-use plastic bags in the next 12 months.
Ms Saunders said the move was a step in the right direction.
“This is very positive news and we hope with ongoing awareness plastic bags will be completely phased out.”
