When a community group needs a hand with an upgrade, an individual needs support for day-to-day life or to progress on the sporting field the Ararat Lions Club is ready to lend a helping hand.
“Every barbecue we have involves the community and the funds go right back into the community,” president Bob Mullen said.
“The money can be donated to almost anything.”
In recent years the club helped to fund renovations at the Scouts Hall, raised money for a girl with disabilities to get a service dog and more recently they will help support a girl who has been selected on the Australian cycling team to compete in Italy.
Decisions on where the money should go is made by members at the business meetings which are held every fortnight.
“It really just depends what comes up we might get a request for donations,” Mr Mullen said.

The Ararat Lions Club has been active since 1971 and currently has 30 active members.
“We’re down the street every Saturday morning and all those funds go back to the community too,” Mr Mullen said.
While some might see cooking as a chore the members of the Lions Club love getting requests from organisations or community events to be involved.
“It's a fun job,” Mr Mullen said.
“You get to cook and meet the people in the street, that’s what it’s all about.”
We serve our local community in any way that we can
- Ararat Lions Club President Bob Mullen
The Ararat Lions Club meets on the second and fourth Wednesday (at 6.30pm for a 7pm start) of the month and are always encouraging new members to join.
The second Wednesday of the month is held at the Lions Club on McNeil Street while the fourth Wednesday is the dinner meeting at Blue Deck.
“We’re always looking for new members especially the young ones,” Mr Mullen said.
“Like anything in any town it's the older ones that are involved and the younger ones are too busy.
“A member can only do what they can, some might come once a month while others come every week.
“It’s up to the individual for how much they can do.”
The Lions Club will host the barbecue for the mid year Super Sale on Friday June 16.
