A workshop for people interested in being involved in the seed library or volunteering to help will be hosted at Ararat Regional Library on Saturday, from 10am.
The library needs volunteers to maintain the seed library.
It will be the first of four workshops during the next year.
People with an interest in gardening can get ideas on how to start an edible garden.
The event is also a way to see what sort of interest there is for these types of workshops.
The purpose of the seed library is to develop a facility within the existing structure of a library, where community members can access seeds donated from other community members for free or for a nominal fee.
It is run for the public benefit by volunteers.
A seed library is beneficial because;
- A library is a safe friendly community space to be utilised by all community members.
- All community members can have access to free and cheap seeds.
- Encourages community members to grow their own food which can increase health and well-being outcomes.
- A traditional library supports growing and cooking of food to support the seed library.
The Seed Share Swap Grow is another option for residents to access within the library, however this will be the task of volunteers, and not library staff.
A designated spot be allocated within the library for a display stand and associated growing information.
Seeds will be donated by local people either in pre-package envelopes or containers and kept in the display stand.
A group of volunteers organised and supported by the Ararat permaculture group will:
- Package bulk seeds that have been donated.
- Ensure labels and forms are replenished.
- Keep the stand stocked and tidy.
- Provide relevant growing information.
