The Eagles were chasing their first win for 2016 in Mininera and District Football League.
The first quarter was a tight tussle, with both teams booting three goals.
The Eagles dominated the second quarter to open up a 13-point lead at half-time.
But Caramut came back strongly in the third quarter to reduce the margin to five at the final change.
The Eagles tried to hold on, but the fairytale was not to be, with Caramut storming home to win by four points.
Tatyoon got over the line against Lismore-Derrinallum in a grand final rematch.
Lismore-Derrinallum was dominant in the first quarter, but Tatyoon answered in the second term.
The game ebbed and flowed again in the second half with Lismore-Derrinallum again opening up a lead.
With a strong wind in the final quarter Tatyoon was full of spirit.
The side kicked five unanswered goals to win by 18 points.
Josh Fraser was the best of the goal-kickers with seven for Tatyoon.
Great Western’s horror run continued as the side went down to Hawksdale-Macarthur by 180 points.
The Lions were competitive for the first quarter.
They kicked just one goal in the remaining three quarters however, as the game slipped away from them.
BJ Burton returned from a hamstring strain and played well, but after four weeks off his fitness was lacking.
Burton, Andrew Beckwith and Adam Bullock were among the players to hold their heads high in an otherwise disappointing result.
Bryson Chessells played his first senior game.
Chessells had already played reserves, but continues to give his all each week.
The draw will only get harder for Great Western as it takes on a strong Tatyoon outfit in round eight on Saturday.
In other Mininera and District league matches Penshurst proved too good for SMW Rovers.
Wickliffe-Lake Bolac suffered its first loss of the season against Glenthompson-Dunkeld.
Moyston-Willaura comfortably defeated a struggling Woorndoo-Mortlake.
