The Vinnies Winter Warm-Up appeal is asking residents to look at what’s been hibernating in their cupboard and donate just one piece of clothing this winter season.
Horsham Vinnies centre day coordinator Veronica McKinlay said the store had already sold hundreds of pairs of boots and coats in recent months.
“We haven’t even hit winter yet and our boots and shoes are walking out the door,” Ms McKinlay said. “We’ve also got a shortage in warm winter coats, particularly for men, children’s clothing and winter blankets.”
Ms McKinlay said the cold winter months were among the store’s busiest times.
“That’s when people really need our help because they just don’t have the clothing to keep warm,” she said.
Vinnies Merchandise Manager, Liz Randle said across the state, every winter Vinnies stores experience a shortage of quality winter woollies and when the cold weather hits, many stores struggle to keep up with demand.
“Many people donate their winter clothes at the end of the season,” said Ms Randle.
“This year we’re asking Victorians, of all shapes and sizes to help Vinnies Shops warm-up for winter by donating clothing at start of the season.”
Ms Randle said donated items helped to raise vital funds for social welfare programs which provide people in need with basic necessities like food, accommodation, education and health services all year round.
She urged people making a donation to their local Vinnies shop to donate during business hours rather than leaving clothes outside, where they may be exposed to poor weather conditions and potential theft.
The Vinnies Centre is at 7 to 9 David Street, Horsham. For more details, call 5382 4003.
