The Society has donated two 12 seater buses, at a cost of around $120,000, which will be shared by residents of the Ararat Retirement Village, Garden View Court, Lowe Street and the Ararat Senior Citizens' Centre and used for outings. One of the buses is equipped for wheel chair access.
Ararat Retirement Village CEO Robyn Woods-Gebler said the Society, which has now wound up, had been fundraising for many years and had hoped to fund the installation of a lift at Gum San Chinese Heritage Centre to assist with access for older people, however, with this project not feasible, the society then looked around for another project to assist the more senior residents of the community.
Two small buses were seen as ideal for transport of groups to functions, while not requiring special licences for the drivers.
Ms Woods-Gebler said the buses would be housed in a purpose built shed at the Retirement Village.
"On behalf of all the groups I would like to thank the Chinese Heritage Society, we are incredibly grateful for their generosity," Ms Woods Gebler said.
A plaque will be placed on each of the buses highlighting the donation by the Society.
