Women from Ararat’s Muslim community gathered with women from the Catholic and Uniting churches to share a cup of tea and get to know each other.
“There was so much to talk about. So much in common. So much more than tea to share,” Ararat’s Bonnie Carter said.
The meeting was the brainchild of Father Andrew Hayes and Pat Lardner, who is a member of the local Catholic Church.
“Muslim women are conspicuous as they move about our community,” Ms Carter said.
“Their clothing makes them so. And because of this they are often the target of unwarranted remarks and stares.
“Pat wanted to show that there are people in the Ararat community who are supportive of and welcoming to these women.”
Ms Carter said further gatherings were already being planned by those that attended the meeting.
