John’s first album Meet Me In Between, was released in 2009.
Due for release in February, his new album was recorded in Nashville with producer Viktor Krauss.
“It ties together stories of the outsiders: the lonely, the heartbroken and those who aren’t afraid to step aside from the mainstream,” Flanagan said.
“The moments of sadness intertwine with the uplifting to create an overarching message of acceptance and change.”
Flanagan contacted Krauss in 2013 after hearing his production work with Nashville singer songwriter Angel Snow.
Krauss was impressed by the strength of John’s songwriting and agreed to produce the album.
The recording took place over three days at Omni Sound Studios in Nashville, with Grammy award-winning engineer Neal Cappellino assisting along with a band of Nashville session musicians whose credits include Willie Nelson, Robert Plant and Emmylou Harris.
The band tracked live as a four-piece with Flanagan (vocals, guitar, banjo), Krauss (double bass), Marco Govino (drum kit) and Todd Lombardo (guitars, mandolin).
Extra tracking was added by Krauss in Nashville and Dave Manton in Melbourne over the following months with a host of guest musicians joining the project including The Mae Trio, Ben Abraham, Brooke Russell, Carena Khoo, Emma Rule and Jane Patterson.
Flanagan’s melodies have seen him win over fans at major folk festivals around Australia.
He also took out the prestigious Gympie Music Muster talent search in 2013.
Flanagan currently plays alongside festival favourite Liz Frencham and bluegrass virtuoso Dan Watkins in a dynamic trio characterised by warm vocal harmonies and impressive acoustic arrangements.
The album There’s Another Way to Where You’re Going is out on February 4.
Flanagan will join alternate country folk act Sal Kimber and The Rollin’ Wheel at the Buangor Cobb and Co on Saturday, February 20 as part of their Southern Summer Halls Tour.
Both bands will be releasing their new albums with a plethora of talented artists in tow.
The show includes a set from Flanagan and guests, interval and supper and a set from Sal Kimber and her five-piece band The Rollin’ Wheel.
