On Saturday that will change.
Magda will lose her hair at a fundraiser at Elizabeth Park in Ararat commencing at 10.30am.
The significance of this event isn’t the space and time between hairdressing appointments but the reason for the hair cut.
Magda will be raising money for Motor Neurone Disease Victoria to aid research into the condition that claimed the life of her husband Fred in August 2014.
At the event there will be hotrods from Melbourne, a jumping castle, face painting, sausage sizzle, live music from PARSO, cake stall, plants and bric-a-brac on sale to help raise much needed funds for research as there is no cause, no treatment and no cure.
Event organiser and close friend Toni Hobson said Magda’s hair has grown to almost 70 centimetres in length.
“It is a very emotional time for Magda, this is a big sacrifice she is making,” she said.
Ms Hobson met Fred just four weeks prior to his death. She said the special bond the couple shared was obvious from day one.
“Fred always said one of the things he loved most about Magda was her hair,” she said.
“He was always holding her hair.”
The pair met on a ship in December 1964. They would have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in May.
The couple moved to the Ararat district in the 1970s where Fred worked as a station manager at a local property.
Fred was an avid horseman who loved riding. He was also an extremely good craftsman with wood.
In 1998 he and Magda move into Ararat.
Several years later Magda noticed Fred’s head was lying strangely to one side and he was also having trouble gripping things. Fred was also having difficulty walking in a straight line.
Fred’s health continued to deteriorate but he died peacefully on August 27 with Magda by his side.
Saturday’s hair cut won’t be the finish to the fundraising drive.
Magda is hoping her hair can be used in the manufacture of wigs for sufferers of alopecia or other hair-loss causing illnesses.
