The children chose colours inspired by red gum leaves for a bridge that will connect the township to the Western Highway as part of the duplication.
VicRoads landscape architects designed two bridge colour schemes for the Peacocks Road highway overpass.
One scheme was inspired by new red gum shoots and the other by the peacock plume in reference to the name of the road.
The children then voted for their favourite.
School principal Paul Buncle said the 37 students had been watching the progress of the work and were looking forward to seeing the bridge go up.
“We have been talking about bridges and the older children have previously made models of bridges,” he said.
“All the students have been excited about being able to choose the colour of a bridge in their own community and have been talking about the colours they would pick.”
As part of the colour-choosing event, the children drew their own interpretation of a bridge, which were on display for VicRoads engineers last Friday.
VicRoads Acting Project Director Nicki Kyriakou said she enjoyed seeing the children’s interpretations.
“There were bridges of all colours and varieties,” she said.
“Maybe there are some future engineers among the students.”
Work to duplicate the highway between Beaufort and Buangor, including a Buangor bypass, is expected to be completed in mid 2016.
