Ararat Skate Park committee member Sergeant Shane Allgood from Ararat Police said there were many ways that the community could help to get this off the ground, including donations of money or materials, in-kind labour, use of equipment, searching for and applying for grants, running fundraising activities and becoming an active participant in the improvement committee.

Sponsors will be recognised with a merit board being erected at the park.

Next Thursday from 7pm-8pm, a meeting will be held at the Ararat SES Building in High Street, Ararat, to gauge community support.

"It is absolutely imperative that any person, children and parents included, who wish to see the park improved attend this meeting," Sgt Allgood said.

"We hope to have potential sponsors at this meeting who wish to gauge the level of interest in the project. These sponsors are not going to commit to the project if there is a lack of interest."

The Ararat Skate Park was built by dedicated locals around 17 years ago and has served as the only facility of its type in the Ararat Rural City area.

Sgt Allgood said with an increase in patronage and a huge surge in the popularity of skateboarding and scooter riding, it is time that the park is given a much needed upgrade.

"Community skate parks act as a haven for young people interested in skating/scooting and socialising with other riders," he said.

"It provides them with the opportunity to learn from each other in a controlled environment. Visitors to the town with children often look for the local skate park and sponsored groups visit on tours as they travel through.

"Ararat's park is in desperate need of modernisation. This will include utilising the existing facilities, while adding a concrete area with customised ramps and rails. Ideally further works will include provision of shade, tables and seating."

Sgt Allgood said there are many children, teens, adults and parents who are passionate about ensuring the facility is upgraded, making it sustainable into the future and they have indicated they are willing to participate in fundraising and maintenance to ensure the future of the Ararat Skate Park facility.

When the park was initially built a large proportion of the works were completed with in-kind labour and donations and Sgt Allgood said that users of the park are hopeful that once again the people of Ararat will see the value in this facility and band together to create a resource that the town can be proud of.

At this stage the Ararat Skate Park Committee is attempting to raise $100,000, through grants, donations/sponsors and fundraising.

"This is a huge ask but I believe it is achievable with commitment from community minded people who think the project is worthwhile," Sgt Allgood said.

Already the committee has been working hard behind the scenes and has raised in excess of $10,000 through a generous donation from Ararat Rotary, Brookfield Multiplex and the Ararat YMCA, while further fundraising raised $1500 for the cause thanks to parents and volunteers. Three community grant applications are also in the process of being assessed.

At next week's meeting agenda items to be discussed during the meeting include a wish list of potential improvements, fundraising ideas, upkeep and maintenance of the park and the timeframe for the improvements to be made.
