RESIDENTS are reminded that while the Fire Danger Period is now over in the Ararat Rural City, local bylaws still apply.
District 16 operations officer, Ian Morley said for those people burning outside the town limits, the CFA is asking them to take care and be aware that people can still be prosecuted for fires being lit unsupervised or unmaintained.
The Fire Danger Period is when the CFA restricts the use of fire in the community to help prevent outbreaks.
Once the Fire Danger Period has been declared, fire restrictions come into force. This means you cannot light a fire in the open air unless you have a permit or comply with certain requirements.
Mr Morley said while restrictions have now been lifted following the summer season, certain laws still apply.
"Permits are available for farmers to carry out burn off operations of stubble in preparation for cropping," he said.
"Most farmers conduct those diligently and within the guidelines of their permits. Even though permits are no longer required with the fire danger period over, we still ask people that they have ensured that their neighbours, CFA and the council are notified.
"It is also important to have a fire break around the burn off and have someone in attendance the entire time."
Mr Morley urged people to contact the Ararat Rural City Council on 5355 0200 to find out what municipal local laws may be in place, while those wishing to conduct a burn should also call the CFA's information line on 1800 668 511.
