As the home and away season reached a conclusion, the Combine went into day two chasing a big score of 236 put on by the third placed Aradale.
Swifts/Great Western was already on the back foot, with a number of its key players missing, and the visitors looked to have the cue in the rack before they even got started.
Early wickets fell, with Aradale paceman Matt Stasse on a hat trick with the score at 2/1.
While Stasse couldn't quite manage cricket's ultimate accolade, he did go on to claim another vital wicket to have the Combine well and truly on the ropes.
Sam Cocks made a valuable 38 runs, but he was the only player to fire.
Stasse finished with the figures of 3/28 to be the leading wicket taker, while captain Tyler Cronin was also effective taking 2/11, closely followed by Riley Taylor (2/17).
Swifts/Great Western was dismissed before the side could reach triple figures all out for 99 from 36 overs and while the win to Aradale had no effect on the final standings, it may give the home side a psychological edge if the two teams are to meet again in the next month.
Youth Club did what was required to ensure the team made its way into second spot on the A grade ladder, with an outright win over Chalambar.
The Clubbers had already bowled themselves into a comfortable position after day one and defending a total of 233, they were always in control.
Chally were bundled out for a disappointing 55 in the first innings and unfortunately things didn't improve as the day went on.
Steve LeGassick was the standout with the ball taking eight wickets for just 19 runs from his 10 overs, while Chalambar's Matt McKinnis and Daniel Gibson were the best of the batsmen with 15 runs each.
After the follow on was enforced, Chalambar's second innings again saw early wickets fall.
Luke Walker made 43 runs down the order, but needed more support, as his team was all out for 79 runs still 99 runs behind Youth Club's first inning total.
Cam Kimber took charge of the second innings for the Clubbers, taking five wickets for 12 runs, while LeGassick backed up his 8/19 with another solid performance with the ball and figures of 3/37.
The outright loss is Chalambar’s third in what has been a disappointing season. It was the team’s first year back in the top division, which saw them held winless over the 12 rounds.
Reigning premier Tatyoon finished its season with two consecutive wins, after defeating Pomonal in a reduced one day match.
Taty skipper Jarrod Blandford opted to bat first and his decision proved to be a good one, as the side made its way to 175 runs after 40 overs.
Michael Harricks led the way with a solid knock of 63, while Andrew McDougall (32) and Richard Tucker (21) each chipped in.
In reply Pomonal managed just 158 runs, with Matt Grinham impressing with 30.
The pick of the bowlers for the match was Tatyoon’s Ash Maconachie, who boasted the best figures of 4/27.
● In B grade Navarre batsman Jesse Hannett smashed his way to 110, which included 19 fours, in his team’s big win over Pomonal.
It was a good day for the Hannett family, with Louis Hannett top scoring for Navarre in C grade with 111.
