Dr Kidman was a clinical psychologist and Director of the Health Psychology Unit at Sydney's Royal North Shore Hospital.
Singapore police said it was investigating, after it was notified of the "unnatural" death of a man in his 80s in hospital.
"Police are investigating the unnatural death," a spokesman said.
He declined to give details, but the term "unnatural death" in Singapore often refers to falls or other accidents.
The Kidman family is shocked and needs privacy, Nicole Kidman's publicist said.
"It is with great sadness that we learn of Dr Tony Kidman's sudden passing. During his 43 years at the University of Technology, Sydney, Tony has contributed greatly - as a colleague, as a researcher, and as a health practitioner," Vice-Chancellor Professor Attila Brungs said in a statement.
"Tony will be missed by all at UTS. Our thoughts are with his family at this time."
Dr Kidman was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia in 2005 for his work as a researcher and as a health practitioner.
He was a contributor to the Australian Women's Weekly, and the magazine's website said staff were addressed about his death today.
A spokeswoman for Royal North Shore Hospital said they would not be commenting.
TV presenter and author Antonia Kidman lives in Singapore with her banker husband, Craig Marran.
Neither Nicole nor Antonia Kidman have yet to make a statement about their father's death.
