The Daily 5 consists of a series of literacy tasks - 'Read to Self', 'Read to Someone', 'Listen to Reading', 'Work on Writing' and 'Word Work'.
Students complete these tasks daily while the teacher meets with small groups or confers with individuals.
The Daily 5 is more than a management system or a curriculum framework, it is a structure that aims to help students develop the daily habits of reading, writing and working independently that will lead to a lifetime of literacy independence.
The Daily 5 has been supported with the introduction of CAFE Reading.
CAFE is an acronym for Comprehension, Accuracy, Fluency, and Expanding Vocabulary, and the system includes goal-setting with individual students, posting of goals on a whole-class board, developing small group instruction based on clusters of students with similar goals, and targeting whole-class instruction based on emerging student needs and fine tuning one on one discussions.
The junior school students at Lake Bolac P-12 College have embraced the Daily 5 and CAFE system and like having personal goals for both their reading and writing.
The students always look forward to their literacy sessions and the teachers are especially enjoying instilling a lifelong love of reading in their students.
