Ararat Lions' president, Norm Tosch said about 150 people attended the ball, which was hailed a great success.
"The theme for the ball was 'ruby red' to mark the 40th anniversary of the charter. Most people wore something red, there were red dresses and red ties. One couple was all decked out in red - they cut a very mean rock and roll on the dance floor," he said.
Music on the night was provided by local band Soft.
"Lots of people made their way onto the dance floor. There was plenty of space between the tables for people to move around in and mingle, which was good," Mr Tosch said.
Steve Shannon from the Willaura Lions Club acted as emcee throughout the evening and gave a good account of the history of the club, which was founded by 21 men including the still active John Dunn.
Mr Dunn was given the honour of cutting the birthday cake.
Mr Tosch said the club decided to have a ball instead of a formal charter dinner as a way to give back to the community.
The Ararat Lions Club has a long history of supporting groups, appeals and organisations both within Ararat and district and Australia wide.
Mr Tosch said the club raised about $500 through the raffle of crayfish and wine on the night, which would go towards adult exercise equipment at Alexandra Gardens.
He said the Lions would look at funding another project with additional money raised from the ball.
Mr Tosch paid tribute to Rosi Sanders and her committee for all their hard work arranging the anniversary celebration.
"They did a great job making such a success of the night and we really appreciate it," he said.
