Young volunteer recognised at Avoca Australia Day breakfast
IN Avoca, residents gathered for the annual Australia Day breakfast on Monday hosted by the Avoca Men’s Shed, where the Noel Watson Matilda Award was presented. The annual award is named after local musician Noel Watson, who performed Waltzing Matilda in the 1988 VFL Grand Final. This year’s recipient was Winter Rowe, recognised for her dedication to volunteering at the Avoca Riverside Market, her creativity, and her positive influence as a role model for other students.
“Noel loved nothing more than working with the students of Avoca Primary School, and they all learned so much from this incredibly talented man,” said Avoca Primary School joint principal Tom Elliott who recalled how Mr Watson worked closely with the students to build their pushcart for the 2013 Energy Breakthrough event along with the rest of the Avoca Men’s Shed.
Mr Elliott praised Winter’s willingness to help wherever she could. “She doesn’t miss an opportunity to help out and was also one of the very first students at Avoca Primary School to volunteer with the Avoca Food Pantry, packing hampers each week,” Mr Elliott said.
