Young excited to lead Australia next week
Ararat’s Chris Young is excited to skipper Australia in the Atlantic Senior Fours tournament in Cyprus, starting next Monday, and his form is as good as ever.
Young recently represented Victoria at the Australian Senior Sides Championships, and they finished third, unlucky not to win gold, and he said his form is good as he prepares to fly out to Cyprus on Friday.
“I personally was pretty happy with my performance, and I was named player of the series, which was good,” he said.
“It was good to play on different surfaces and get a feel for everything that will be happening over the next couple of weeks.
“I have never been to Cyprus, but I believe they are outdoor carpet-type greens and they are a part of a big hotel complex on the Mediterranean Sea, so hopefully the weather is kind to us.”
Young is skipper of his rink, with Tony Schiavello (VIC) the lead, Scott Chamberlain (QLD) second, and Terry Warder (NSW) third.
He is also skippering the mixed fours with the team consisting of Claire Sanders (VIC), the lead, Scott Chamberlain (QLD), second, and Lisa Featherby (WA), third.
Young has only played with Schiavello previously and is looking forward to playing with the others, whom he has played against in the past.
He said that while winning would be great, enjoying the experience is the main thing.
“I think the best outcome we could have as a team of men and ladies is to enjoy the experience together and respect the fact that we are representing Australia,” he said.
“If we happen to succeed, that will be a bonus, but it’s fantastic that I can represent my country and my club - Chalambar Golf Bowls Club - and more importantly, I am representing all of the clubs in the Grampians Association and Bowls Victoria, so I am looking forward to performing and making those people proud.”
This is the second time Young represented Australia, previously playing a few games for Australia in 1999.
“It was a bit of a surprise to get a call up, even though the criteria is 55-and-over,” he said.
“Twenty nations are playing the event and ninety teams, and they are the best senior bowlers in the world, and so I am looking forward to it.”
